Undergraduate Students:
We are currently seeking 1-2 undergraduate researchers at K-State to assist with fieldwork, lab work, and data management. Much of our work during the field season (~May through August) takes place outside in the field digging soil pits, collecting soil / water / plant samples, and monitoring sensor arrays. Year round, indoor tasks include lab work, sample processing, and data management. Undergraduates will be paid an hourly rate and have the option to pursue an independent project if interested. Graduate Students
We are currently seeking applicants for two graduate student positions (MS or PhD) in the Division of Biology to start in Jan. 2027 (spring semester) or Aug. 2027 (fall semester). K-State is located in Manhattan, KS, part of in the Flint Hills ecoregion of the central Great Plains. A subset of fieldwork will likely take place at the nearby Konza Prairie Biological Station – one of the best-studied grasslands in the world with nearly 50-years of vegetation, stream, climate, and soil moisture data (among other types of data records). Opportunities / interest in expanding research throughout Kansas or the broader Great Plains will be highly encouraged. For a spring semester start, the position would begin in January 2027. For a fall semester start, the position would begin August 2027.
The position includes a stipend of $30,771 annually (paid bi-weekly), and coverage of tuition and university fees. Students also qualify for a university-subsidized health insurance plan.
Research questions and approaches can be tailored based on the student’s interests, but should be relavent to one of these three broad topics:

Subsurface impacts of land-use/cover change in grasslands and savannas - Woody plant encroachment, conversion to row-crop agriculture, and changes in land management practices (grazing, fire, etc.) in grasslands can have massive impacts on rooting dynamics, soil structure and, ultimately, subsurface water movement and storage. We are interested in how changes in plant cover alter the structure of the subsurface in ways that impacts water fluxes.

Plant water-use strategies and coexistence in water-limited ecosystems - Water is a key resource shaping interactions among plant species and functional groups, particularly during drought and other climate extremes. We are interested in how differences in rooting depth, water-use strategies, and access to subsurface water resources influence competition and coexistence among functional groups, and how these interactions ultimately affect ecosystem resilience.

Drivers and consequences of soil water preferential flow - Preferential flow (the rapid movement of water through macropores) causes large amounts of water to bypass the broader soil matrix and has important consequences for nutrient / pollutant / sediment fluxes and soil biogeochemical processes. We are interested in how rooting architecture interacts with rainfall characteristics to influence the location and timing of preferential flow.
Requirements

Hold an undergraduate degree in ecology, biology, earth sciences, or related field by the time of hire

Enthusiasm for ecohydrology and/or or grassland and savanna ecosystems

Strong oral and written communication skills

Work effectively independently and as part of a team

Be respectful to all team members and follow safety protocols

Hold a valid driver’s license

Enjoy working outdoors and a willingness to conduct fieldwork outside in hot weather
Preferred qualifications

Previous experience in plant ecophysiology-, plant ecology,- or soil hydrology-related fieldwork / research

Demonstrated experience conducting independent research

Statistical experience and using the R coding language

PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to have already completed an MS
